Don't pay anyone for anything, it's all available for free. Focus on a portfolio of projects before getting certs (make your employer pay for certs). Buy a Raspberry Pi (or a second/third/fourth Raspberry Pi) and run something cool on it in containers. Build a Kubernetes cluster at home and in the cloud. Pick a configuration management tool, learn it well, form strong opinions about it and defend those opinions to the death.
