Udacity Data Science Nanodegree review/other suggestions?

Background: Graduated last September with a BS degree in Computer Science. Started working for a bank in the NYC area as a software engineer. Don’t really enjoy my work as its mostly production bug fixes/minor improvements on current application. Doing some C# front end work these days but apart from that work on the the server side with Java.

In terms of skills, I only know Java and have done a bit of Python & R during my undergrad with data science and machine learning courses.

Current Situation: Just applied for my work visa extension which will take 2-3 months. Deliberating to try out the online courses in data science.

Questions: 1. I want to explore data science as I was a TA for it during undergrad so was thinking about Udacity’s Data Science Nanodegree program (https://www.udacity.com/course/data-scientist-nanodegree--nd025). The syllabus seems to be in depth and has lots of projects. Has anyone taken it and what are your thoughts about the coursework? I don’t expect it to get me a job but want to see if I’m interested in it.

  1. Are there any other data science courses you would recommend to a full time employee who has CS background?

Thanks for your advice!

What do you all think of Udacity's new Data Scientist Nanodegree?

I'm considering taking it, but I don't know if it is worth it. It is really expensive. What do you all think?

Best data science course/certification?

Currently working as an engineer. Thinking of studying while working full time.

Doing some research before taking the jump. (I know there are different streams: data analysts, data science, machine learning). I'm looking to get the most bang for my buck. I can program in Python, but otherwise complete beginner in any statistics or data related stuff.

Looking for some opinions. l don't have the funds for a master's yet. Hopefully after I land a junior position, I'll face up and apply for one.

Some really popular ones I've seen: -Udacity data science nanodegree: https://www.udacity.com/course/data-scientist-nanodegree--nd025

-edX MITx micromasters in statistics and data science: https://www.edx.org/micromasters/mitx-statistics-and-data-science

-Microsoft Professional Program in Data Science: https://academy.microsoft.com/en-us/professional-program/tracks/data-science/

Or anything else you can suggest! Let me know!

I guess some of the characteristics (I think) make a good program IMO: -Reputable organization -Able to earn a certification - Able to create and use models in a portfolio -attractive to employer's - be able how to build tangible, technical code: data mining, programming, and machine leaving - touches on visualization and interpretation as well.

Any others you have in mind, I'm open to check out!!

thanks for your positive words.

I have been applying crazily as well.

but I am unable to get any response from these big companies.

is it not possible to catch their eyes, with my Udacity projects?

because , they are the only data science/data analytics stuff I have to show on my resume.

and frankly, even any other company its not getting much positive result as to hiring.

again, so do you think its impossible to get the big companies call up with Udacity projects?

FYI, these are the courses i am talking about.

1 )udacity data analyst

2) udacity data science

also , with respect to white board coding,

i have found some options.

1) interviewkickstart ----expensive + they say its for people who are having some good experience.

2) outco ---they had a interview with me on algorithms, but I wasnt able to crack it to get enrolled for the course.

3) interviewcamp.io ---this one seems fine with pricing, and also , the guy is usually active on quora

his quora site --https://www.quora.com/profile/Harsh-Goel

his linkedin --- https://www.linkedin.com/in/harsh-goel-076756b

any other suggestions as well, please shoot at me if u can :D
